Players from all over the country flock to the New York Collegiate Baseball League every summer. And each different season brings players from another portion of the country from scenic upstate New York. For example, the 2006 season saw an influx of players from California-based schools including current Cleveland Indians farmhand Cord Phelps (Amsterdam ’06). Recently, the Bayou has been a fertile recruiting ground as the NYCBL has seen players from Louisiana State University and the University of New Orleans. The Oneonta Outlaws have signed two Ragin’ Cajuns from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette in juniors Jordan Poirrier and Matt Goulas.

The Alfred Thunder of the New York Collegiate Baseball League have signed two players from nationally-ranked Birmingham Southern College; sophomores Jesse Meier and Jonathan Walker. The duo joins the Thunder after helping the Panthers to a 34-5 record and a division championship in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s East Division. Despite having one of the best win-loss records in NCAA Division III, Birmingham Southern is ineligible for postseason play as a Division III provisional member. Prior to BSC, Meier and Walker were teammates at Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn, Ga.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The New York Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce its’ schedule for the 2010 season. The summer collegiate wood-bat circuit features 14 teams spread across upstate New York.

 

The 42-game regular season schedule begins on Friday, June 4 and runs through Wednesday, July 28 with a rain date of July 29. The 29th annual NYCBL All-Star Game will be played on Monday, July 12, at East Field in Glens Falls, N.Y. The divisional playoffs will commence on Friday, July 30, and conclude with the NYCBL Championship Series in mid-August.

The 2010 minor league baseball season kicked off with a bang on Thursday, April 8, as 2007 New York Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Year Mike Fiers (Saratoga ’07-’08) struck out seven over five shutout innings for the Brevard County Manatees in a Florida State League game with the Daytona Cubs. Fiers is just one of 59 former NYCBL players on minor league rosters for teams at the Triple A, Double A and full-season Single A levels. Short-season leagues will not begin play until mid June.

One of the most important positions on a summer collegiate baseball team is the pitcher. In the past, teams that pitched well have done well in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The 2009 league champion Amsterdam Mohawks led the 14-team circuit with 392 strikeouts and finished second overall with a 2.82 team earned run average. With the notion of quality pitching in mind, the Cooperstown Hawkeyes have tabbed 2009 D3baseball.com All-American Brad Orosey from Texas Lutheran University to be one of their pitchers.

Summer baseball seasons come and go and more times than naught, a player during his collegiate career will make at least two or three different stops around the country in various summer leagues. It is very rare that a player stays around two summers with the same team, let alone three. Though there are success stories, most notably 2007 NYCBL Pitcher of the Year Shane Wolf. In his second year with the Elmira Pioneers, Wolf showed notable improvement and was the most dominant player in the NYCBL en route to being drafted by the Houston Astros. University of Texas at Tyler junior pitcher Matthew Schimpf of the Niagara Power is looking to follow a similar path.

Oakland Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden (Hornell ’03) returned to the mound at the Oakland Coliseum on Tuesday evening in a Major League Baseball regular season game for the first time since a foot injury last August ended his 2009 campaign. Braden started against the Seattle Mariners and fashioned a four hit, 10-strikeout performance over seven innings in what would eventually be a 2-1 victory in 10 innings for Oakland.

The old saying goes that hitting is contagious. Well, in this case, it’s pitching that is contagious. In the span of three days, former Brockport Riverbat pitchers Chuck Fontana (’09) and Adam Brown (’07) each pitched no-hitters for their respective schools. Fontana, a junior at Division-II Molloy College, spun a complete game no-hitter on Wednesday, March 31, in an East Coast Conference game against Queens College. Brown, a junior at Division-III Cortland State, fired a seven-inning no-hitter on Friday, April 2, in a non-conference game at home versus Cazenovia College.
