The America East Conference has selected Binghamton University junior Corey Taylor (Brockport ’08) as its’ 2010 Player of the Year. Taylor was named first team all-league and was one of nine New York Collegiate Baseball League players chosen for the America East all-conference squad.

Two former New York Collegiate Baseball League players have earned major awards from the Northeast Conference for the 2010 season. Central Connecticut State University senior Sean Allaire (Saratoga ’09) was chosen as the NEC Player of the Year and Bryant University senior Brent Almeida (Little Falls ’08) was tabbed NEC Pitcher of the Year. Nine former players, including Allaire and Almeida were named to the NEC all-conference team.

Southeast Missouri State University freshman Shae Simmons (Watertown ’10) has been selected as the Ohio Valley Conference’s Freshman of the Year for the 2010 season. Simmons was named to the All-OVC first team as a relief pitcher and to the all-rookie team. He is the fourth player in school history to earn OVC Freshman of the Year honors.

College of the Holy Cross freshman Stephen Wadsworth (Geneva ’10) has been selected as the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Year for the 2010 season. He is second Holy Cross player to win the Patriot League’s top rookie award in the last five years. Wadsworth was also named second team All-Patriot League.

The Empire 8 conference has announced its’ 2010 all-conference team and major award winners. Two former New York Collegiate Baseball League players and one former coach combined to win three of the four major awards given out. Rochester Institute of Technology senior Geoff Dornes (Webster ’08-’09) was named Empire 8 Player of the Year, St. John Fisher College senior Dan Jurik (Webster ’09) was chosen Empire 8 Pitcher of the Year and St. John Fisher College interim head coach Brandon Potter (Watertown ’08-’09) was selected as Empire 8 Coach of the Year.

For the second time this season, former New York Collegiate Baseball League all-star Justin Greene (Hornell ’05) has been chosen as the Carolina League’s Player of the Week. The award is for games played in the week of May 17 through May 23. Greene has won two of the six weekly awards handed out by the Advanced-A circuit this season.

The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs of the New York Collegiate Baseball League have signed an all-conference catcher for the 2010 season. The Diamond Dawgs have added Widener University sophomore utility player Sean Saverio to their roster. Saverio just completed his second year with the Pride and helped them to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time since 1999.

The Webster Yankees set a franchise record last season with four players named to the All-NYCBL team. In addition, a total of seven Webster players competed in all-star festivities between the NYCBL All-Star Game and the NYCBL Future Stars Game. The Yankees have re-signed one of the two players to be named to both the All-NYCBL team and the NYCBL Western Division all-star team. Returning to the Yankees for the 2010 New York Collegiate Baseball League season is Ollie Bertrand from Flagler College.

Veterans are an important part of any baseball team, whether it be at the professional, collegiate or summer collegiate level. At least in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, teams try to find a proper mix of young and old that results in a winning formula. The Eastern Division’s Albany Dutchmen are bringing a veteran first baseman to the capital district this summer in Winthrop University junior Brett Thomas. The third-year collegian is projected to be a starter for the Dutchmen at either first base or designated hitter.

Former New York Collegiate Baseball League all-star Casper Wells (Saratoga ’04) made his Major League Baseball debut on Saturday night as the Detroit Tigers edged the Boston Red Sox, 7-6, in 12 innings at Comerica Park. Wells is the 31st former NYCBL player to reach the Major League level and the first in the history of the Oneonta Outlaws/Saratoga Phillies franchise.
