GENEVA, N.Y. – Adam Journic’s (Capital) strong outing on the hill allowed the Genesee Rapids to defeat the Geneva Twins5-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) action from McDonough Park, Friday night.

Rapids’ starter Journic allowed just four hits and one walk over eight-innings of work, while striking out four and allowed three runs (all earned). He improved to 3-2 on the season. Teammate Jason Euler (Mesa CC) picked up the save and fanned two in an inning of work.

The Twins got things rolling in the bottom of the first as Janson Bourque (LSU-Eunice) singled and later came around to score on Tre Edwards’ (Murray St.) triple. Zach Goldstein’s (Southern New Hampshire) sacrifice fly to left allowed Edwards to score and put Geneva up 2-0.

Genesee would go scoreless for the first four-innings before tying the game up in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back walks to Kellen Creech (Ave Maria) and Chris Welch (Mississippi Col.) opened the inning for the Rapids. Creech and Welch later moved up a base each on a sacrifice bunt by Chaz Tanner (Virginia Wise). With one out Tony Schultz (Northwestern Col.) singled to score Creech from third and cut the lead in half. Welch scored to tie the game as teammate Andrew Bonnette (Walsh) grounded out to the first baseman.

Geneva (13-9) later retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth to go up 3-2. Fernando Garcia (Murray St.) walked on seven pitches to start the inning. An error by the pitcher allowed Jason Ibrahim (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) to reach first and move Garcia to second. Teammate Justin Green (Wabash) reached on a fielder’s choice and load the bases for the Twins with no outs.  Sean Feeney (Wilmington) reached first on a fielder’s choice as Green was out at second on the play, but this allowed Garcia to score and put the Geneva back in front.

The lead would not last for long for Geneva as the Rapids tied the game at three in the top of the sixth. Jack LaMarca (Ohio Northern) walked to start the inning for Genesee. He later reached third on an error by the pitcher, which allowed Michael Kerr (Houghton) to reach first. Riley Roberts’ (Fullerton Col.) sacrifice fly to center allowed LaMarca to tag up from third and score to make it a 3-3 before the inning came to a close.

The Rapids (11-12) tacked on a run in each of the seventh and the eighth innings on two hits and two errors to make it 5-3. That is all they would need to hold the Twins off and hand the team their second straight loss.

Twins’ Bourque picked up his fourth multi hit game of the season as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored tonight. Teammate Edwards continued his hot hitting as he went 1-for-4 with a triple and a RBI. Edwards is second in the NYCBL in batting average (.426).

Geneva starting pitcher John Nargoski (Iona) was tagged with the loss tonight. He went five-innings allowing two hits, three runs (all earned), walked six and fanning three.

These same two teams will meet again tomorrow at 5 p.m. at McDonough Park in Geneva.
