Utica uses seven-run second to pound Red Wings
UTICA, N.Y. — Six batters had multi-hit days as the Utica Brewers pounded the Geneva Red Wings, 14-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Donovan Stadium, Sunday night.
Jesse Pintado (Miami Dade) put bookends on a second inning where the Brewers sent 11 to the plate. The sophomore infielder led the frame with a base hit, and he capped the stanza with a two-RBI single plating Stephen Dezzi (Tampa U) and Kenny Durling (Misericordia) as Utica scored seven for an 8-0 lead.
Brian Pruett (Coastal Carolina) and Eros Modena (Indian River St.) pushed the second-inning deluge with back-to-back RBI doubles. Pruett brought home Daniel De La Calle (Miami Dade) while Modena’s two-bagger scored Andrew McNett.
Despite issuing 10 walks, a quartet of Brewer pitchers held the Red Wings to three runs on five hits.
David Sharpe (Broward) came out of the bullpen and pitched a pair of scoreless innings for the win. Tony DiMaio (Waubonsee CC) came on and tossed two shutout frames. Tyler Murphy (Southesastern) struck out the side in the ninth.
Starter, Jordan Sechler (Arkansas Pine Bluff) left with the lead (10-3) after four.
Geneva scored three in the fourth. Lukas Sokol (Toledo) plated Jesse Puschek (Canisius) with a two-out single. Leon Stimpson (Alvernia) worked a bases-loaded walk to score Robbie Enslen, and Chris Ray (Alvernia) reached on an error allowing Sokol to come home.
